Citation Management: EndNote, RefWorks, Zotero

This guide offers basic help for using various citation management systems in addition to answering frequently asked questions and providing NYU-specific information.

Find Full Text

The Locate menu offers several ways to access files in your library and to look up items online. The menu can be opened by clicking the straight arrow button () at the top-left of the right-hand column of the Zotero pane.

The Library Lookup option lets you locate items in an online library catalog so you can track down a physical or online full-text copy of the resource.

For PCs:
  1. In Zotero, Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced
  2. In the resolver field, input the following URL: https://ezproxy.med.nyu.edu OR the URL: https://search.hsl.med.edu/openurl/01NYU_HS/01NYU_HS:HSL
  3. In Zotero, highlight an article with no PDF, click the green arrow in the menu bar.  Select Library Lookup.
  4.  If the NYU Health Sciences Library has the item electronically, a link to the full text will show in the resulting browser window.  You can download the PDF and upload to Zotero.  Or simply grab the citation and PDF.  Merge the two records.
For Macs:
  1. Go to Settings > Advanced
  2. In the resolver field, input the following URL: https://ezproxy.med.nyu.edu OR the URL: https://search.hsl.med.edu/openurl/01NYU_HS/01NYU_HS:HSL

Add PDFs

Add a PDF to your library by opening Zotero, then drag and drop the PDF into the collection you would like to add it to. If the PDF has been created with Optical Character Recognition, Zotero can retrieve the metadata for the PDF. Either right-click (PC) or control-click (Mac) and select Retrieve Metadata for PDF from the drop down menu.
