EndNote, RefWorks, Mendeley, and Zotero

This guide offers basic help for using various citation management systems in addition to answering frequently asked questions and providing NYU-specific information.

Import references from PubMed

1. Perform a search in PubMed using the NYUHSL-specific link of https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?myncbishare=nynyumlib&otool=nynyumlib

2. Select the desired references by checking off the boxes on the left of each article title. If you want to import all your results leave all boxes unchecked. You can export up to 10,000 citations at a time.

3. Click on the “Send to” box on the top of the page and select “Citation Manager”

4. Click on “Create File” and allow the file to download to your computer.

5. Open file with EndNote (this may happen automatically). Mac users will be prompted to open the EndNote application one time only.

Import references from other databases

You have the option of exporting references from other databases (e.g. CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, etc.).

When searching these online databases, look for options to export, save, or download references to EndNote or in the RIS format.

The references will be imported into the open library. The references will be displayed in the temporary Imported References group on the left Groups panel.
