Current NYU HSL Open Access Publishing Deals

This page lists all of the current open access (OA) publishing deals available to NYU researchers with academic publishers including journals articles & monographs.OA publishing supports the values of NYU Langone by allowing us to help remove financial obstacles which limit access to information, share our expertise and resources on a global level, and remove barriers with regards to health equity.

The NYU Health Sciences Library will participate in OA publishing deals when the agreement is financially viable and provides authors with comprehensive open access publishing options. Additionally, NYUHSL does not fund APCs or open access fees, but encourages researchers, to take advantage of discounts or waivers provided by our select publishers. Discounts and benefits vary by publisher.  Please note, corresponding authors need to use their institutional email address. 

 

Journal Article Publishing Deals

 American Chemical Society (up for renewal on 12/31/2025) Is a nonprofit chemistry organization with over 151,000 members worldwide, as well as the publisher of over 75 peer-reviewed and highly respected journals across the chemistry field. ACS offers a rapid publishing timeline (median of two weeks from acceptance to publication) and a global audience of respected chemistry researchers. Through NYU’s Open Access deal with American Chemical Society, all NYU-affiliated researchers are eligible to publish their work open access in any of their journals (both hybrid and 100% open access journals) at no cost to the researcher. American Society for Microbiology (up for renewal on 12/31/2025) Is a professional life science organization with over 37,000 members who specializes in publishing across the microbial sciences. As of 2025, ASM has moved to a Subscribe to Open (S2O) model for its six primary research journals as their way to transition into OA publishing. Through NYU’s agreement with ASM, NYU-affiliated authors are eligible to publish open access in ASM’s Open Access and Subscribe to Open journals at a discounted member rate to the researcher (no APCs; page charges and supplemental material fee apply). BMJ Case Reports  is a leading, peer-reviewed medical journal and the world’s largest single collection of clinical case reports, with over 27,000 published cases from more than 70 countries. The journal is dedicated exclusively to the publication of clinically important case reports across all medical specialties, providing an invaluable educational resource for healthcare professionals and researchers. Our NYU Fellowship code is 645517. Use this to submit manuscripts to BMJ Case Reports, Veterinary Record, or In Practice.

Cambridge University Press (up for renewal on 12/31/2025) Is a not-for-profit academic publisher which has traditionally offered subscription journals but more recently has begun publishing open access in both fully open access and hybrid journals, aiming to transition to 100% open access publishing by the end of 2024. Cambridge University Press currently offers over 350 Open Access/hybrid journals across a variety of disciplines, with particular focus on the humanities. Through NYU’s agreement with Cambridge University Press, all NYU-affiliated researchers are eligible to publish their work in any of their Open Access or hybrid journals at no cost to the researcher. For more information, please visit our one-sheet on publishing with Cambridge University Press. Submit your research using your institutional affiliation (ideally using ORCID). Please note that eligibility is based on the corresponding author's affiliation.Upon acceptance, choose the Gold Open Access option in your author publishing agreement form and select a creative commons license. Authors are advised to check any funder or institutional mandates, for example, research-funded authors may need to choose CC-BY (Creative Commons Attribution License). De Gruyter (Schools of Medicine-Only) (up for renewal on 12/31/2025) Is an independent academic publisher who publishes fully open access, hybrid, Subscribe to Open, and toll access journals across a variety of disciplines, with a particular focus on the humanities. Working to expand their open access publishing, De Gruyter has pledged to transition 90% of their subscription journals to open access by 2028. Through NYU’s agreement with De Gruyter, NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine affiliated authors are eligible to publish open access in De Gruyter’s fully open access and hybrid journals at no cost to the researcher. Emerald Publishing (up for renewal on 12/31/2025) is an academic publisher currently offering 310 journals covering 13 subject areas from Business, Management, HR, Hospitality, Engineering, Health & Social Care, to other critical areas of research. Emerald prides itself on being one of only a handful of publishers who does not impose an embargo period when publishing through their green OA route. Through NYU’s Open Access deal with Emerald Publishing, all NYU-affiliated authors are eligible to publish their work open access in any Emerald journal (both fully open access and hybrid journals) at no cost to the author. Karger (up for renewal on 12/31/2025) Is an academic publisher of 100 peer-reviewed medical journals, including open access and hybrid publications. Through NYU’s agreement with Karger, all NYU-affiliated researchers are eligible to publish their work in any of their Open Access or hybrid journals at no cost to the researcher. For more information, please visit Karger’s website and review this document about how to submit a manuscript.  Corresponding authors affiliated with NYU are eligible for full coverage of APC and Authors ChoiceTM publication fee and all additional costs for articles published in full Open Access and hybrid journals (subscription journals with an Open Access option): https://www.karger.com/open-access/submit-and-publish-open-access.

Microbiology Is a journal publishing the latest advances in the field of microbiology for more than seventy years. Through NYU’s agreement with Microbiology, all NYU-affiliated researchers are eligible to publish their work in this journal at no cost to the researcher. For more information, please visit the Microbiology Society's website.

MIT Press’s Direct to Open program uses the collective power of libraries to subsidize new publications of scholarly monographs that are available digitally open access with the option to purchase a physical copy, at no cost to authors. About 25% of MIT Press’ books are published open access. 

PLOS (up for renewal on 12/31/2025) is a 100% open access nonprofit publisher that publishes STEM research across its twelve journals. All of the journals are open access and utilize the traditional peer review process. Through NYU’s Open Access deal with PLOS, all NYU-affiliated researchers are eligible to publish their work in any of their journals at no cost to the researcher. NYU’s partnership with PLOS means authors will pay no fees when they publish Open Access (OA) in any of the following PLOS journals:

Springer Nature (BioMed Central (BMC) and SpringerOpen), (up for renewal on 12/31/2025) is a publisher of over 200 journals in the fields of science, technology, and medicine. All of their original research articles are made freely accessible via Open Access.When you publish your research with BioMed Central click here and follow the Submit a Manuscript instructions. BMC will calculate at 15% discount with your submission provided you denote NYU as your institution and use your NYU Medical Center email address in the contact information.

University of Michigan Press has committed itself to publish an increasing number of their monographs open access (75% in 2023) through their Fund to Mission project, at no cost to authors. 

Taylor and Francis (up for renewal on 12/31/2027) is an academic publisher with over 350 fully open access journals, publishing across fields such as the humanities and social sciences, science, science and technology, engineering and medicine and healthcare. Through NYU's Read & Publish agreement with Taylor & Francis, NYU-affiliated authors are eligible to publish open access in any of the Taylor & Francis' Hybrid or Fully OA journals, excluding Dove, FSG, Peer J, F1000, at no cost to the researcher. Through Taylor & Francis' Open Access workflow, affiliated authors will qualify for this deal upon article acceptance.
