Deflating mental representation / Frances Egan, 2025, ISBN: 9780262381963 Details & Author Links
A novel account of the explanatory role of representation in both the cognitive sciences and commonsense practice that preserves the virtues without the defects of the prevailing two views about mental representation. Philosophers of mind tend to hold one of two broad views about mental representation: they are either robustly realist about mental representations, taking them to have determinate, objective content independent of attributors’ explanatory interests and goals, or they embrace some form of anti-realism, holding that mental representations are at best useful fictions. Neither view is satisfactory. In Deflating Mental Representation, Frances Egan develops and defends a distinctive third way—a view she calls a deflationary account of mental representation—that both resolves philosophical worries about content and best fits actual practice in science and everyday life. According to Egan’s deflationary account, appeal to mental representation does indeed pick out causes of behavior, but the attribution of content to these causes is best understood as a pragmatically motivated gloss, justified in part by attributors’ explanatory interests and goals. Content plays an explanatory role in the deflationary account, but one quite different than that assumed by robust representational realists. Egan also develops a novel account of perceptual experience as a kind of modeling of our inner lives by aspects of external reality and explains the role of appeal to representation in this process.

Evidence-Based Surgery: A Guide to Understanding and Interpreting the Surgical Literature / Achilles Thoma, 2025, ISBN: 9783031870835 Details & Author Links
Now in a revised second edition, this book is a comprehensive guide to teach surgeons, surgical fellows and surgical residents, regardless of their specialty, the skills to appraise what they encounter in the surgical literature. Surgeons need to be able to understand what they read before applying the conclusions of a surgical article to their practice. As most surgeons do not have the extra training in health research methodology, understanding how the research was done, how to interpret the results, and finally deciding to apply them to the patient level can be a difficult task. Chapters included here explain the methodological issues pertaining to the various study designs reported in the surgical literature. Readers are taught how to search the literature for the best evidence that will answer the surgical problem under discussion. An identified article that seems relevant to the problem under investigation can be appraised by addressing three key questions: 1) Is the study I am reading valid? 2) what are the results of this study? and 3) can I apply these results to my patients? Chapters new to this edition discuss cluster RCTs, network meta-analyses, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and core outcome sets (COS). While the primary goal of Evidence-Based Surgery is to teach surgeons how to appraise the surgical literature, an added benefit is that the concepts explained here may help research-minded surgeons produce higher quality research.

Iron Metabolism in Human Health and Disease / Kostas Pantopoulos, 2025, ISBN: 9783031920332 Details & Author Links
This book provides a state-of-the-art overview on the role of bioiron in health and disease. Iron is an essential constituent of simple and complex organisms and has played a critical role in the origin of life. Cells utilize iron for energy metabolism, oxygen transport, and several biochemical reactions due to its flexible coordination chemistry and its unique ability to serve both as electron donor and acceptor. The term “bioiron” was coined to emphasize the importance of iron in biology and medicine. Even though iron is an abundant metal, its bioavailability is limiting. This often leads to iron-deficient states, which manifest in anemia and other co-morbidities. In fact, iron deficiency is the most common medical condition worldwide. On the other hand, excess iron is potentially toxic due to its redox reactivity. Iron toxicity is illustrated in pathologies of iron overload disorders, such as hereditary hemochromatosis or iron-loading anemias. Deregulation of iron metabolism is also observed in prevalent metabolic, cardiovascular, or neurological disorders. Our knowledge of iron metabolism has dramatically increased during the last 30-40 years with the discovery of elegant iron homeostatic networks that operate at the cellular and systemic levels. These include the IRE/IRP regulatory system and the hepcidin/ferroportin axis. The iron hormone hepcidin has emerged as a master regulator of systemic iron traffic and as a pharmacological target for iron-related disorders. The book offers a comprehensive overview of the rapidly growing bioiron field and aims to attract the attention of students, basic scientists, and clinicians.

Optimizing the Diagnostic Power of Otoacoustic Emissions Using Theoretical Cochlear Mechanics / Arturo Moleti, 2025, ISBN: 9783031905148 Details & Author Links
This book examines the diagnostic usefulness of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) in the context of theoretical cochlear mechanics. OAEs have proven to be immensely useful for diagnostic purposes. The phenomenology of hearing physiology, and OAEs in particular, is briefly summarized, providing the necessary references to the literature. State-of-the-art linear and nonlinear mathematical models of the cochlea are discussed, using fundamental concepts of fluid dynamics and mechanics of vibrating systems, often exploiting the formal analogy between mechanical and electric linear systems. In particular, it is explained how the theoretical predictions about the OAE level, phase, and nonlinear I/O functions allow one to design advanced acquisition and analysis tools that significantly improve the specificity and sensitivity of OAEs to hearing dysfunction and other important physiological effects. Examples of diagnostic applications of OAEs in audiology, neurology, and space physiology are discussed, with all of the information needed to develop an OAE experiment provided, from instrument and acquisition setup to signal analysis and theoretical interpretation. The book is targeted at graduate students and researchers in hearing science with at least a basic knowledge of classical physics, calculus, Fourier analysis and signal analysis.

The Power of Scent: How Smells Seduce and Heal / Hanns Hatt, 2025, ISBN: 9783031885242 Details & Author Links
Nothing is possible without the nose! We breathe, smell and taste with it. Smells warn us of dangers, and scents can awaken memories and feelings. All without including the mind. The nose decides who we find seductive or who we simply can't smell. We often only realize how important smell is when illnesses like corona rob us of this sense. Everyone's scent preferences are individual. Just like our own scent, which sends out messages and helps us find a partner. The exciting thing is: We don't just perceive these messages with our nose; scents have an effect on the whole body. As the latest scientific research has shown, they can also accelerate the healing of wounds, change the heartbeat and improve hair growth and digestion. They also influence the brain: we may become calmer or more active. Even tumor cells react to scents and reduce their growth. Conversely, tumor cells themselves emit odorous substances, which trained dogs can recognize. This book is a translation of the original German edition “Die Lust am Duft” by Hanns Hatt and Regine Dee, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH, DE in 2023. The translation was done with the help of an artificial intelligence machine translation tool. The authors subsequently revised and added new content, and the text was copy-edited to enhance its style.

The Psychosocial Impact of Rheumatic Conditions: Caring for the Whole Patient / Jillian Rose-Smith, 2025, ISBN: 9783031953385 Details & Author Links
This book focuses on a holistic approach to providing care to patients with rheumatic illnesses that goes beyond the biomedical approach to include the psycho-social and cultural needs of patients. A diagnosis of a chronic rheumatic illness can dramatically affect all aspects of a person’s life. These life-altering conditions are characterized by physical pain and inflammation that may reduce or impair functioning of one or more parts of the musculoskeletal system and in some cases impact other organs throughout the body. Often accompanying these physical manifestations of the rheumatic illness are the psychological and social aspects that affect one’s overall health and quality of life. Due to the chronicity of many rheumatic illnesses, managing and coping with the illness is often an ever-evolving process that can span throughout the developmental spectrum or lifespan of the patient experience. A strictly biomedical approach to the treatment of rheumatic illnesses often fails to address these key aspects of the patients' overall well-being. A more comprehensive approach, inclusive of the bio-psycho-social-cultural lens, with the patient’s voice at its core, is needed to inform and ultimately deliver quality patient care and achieve optimal health outcomes. This book serves as s a tool for the entire interdisciplinary rheumatology health care team. This comprehensive approach is framed within the context of well-documented health disparities in rheumatology with a focus on psycho, social, emotional and environmental aspects of health that contribute to patient quality of life. It explores the needs of special populations and provide opportunities for clinicians to consider how to treat diverse populations in a more inclusive way. At the center of this book is the patient’s voice utilizing patient stories to provide the reader with real life examples that reflect the life cycle of rheumatology patients and the impact of key interventions or lack thereof that can impact the patient experience. Lastly, the book offers practical, evidence-based strategies for members of the rheumatology health care team. These tools can be integrated in their assessment and treatment plans for patients and their loved ones. This holistic approach can help to foster effective communication, build trust, enhance partnerships and amplify the patient voice to optimize health outcomes and enhance overall well-being.
