The manuscript submission process

Some journals submit the final published version of articles to PubMed Central (PMC) on behalf of its authors, however some submit with a time delay which is not compliant with the updated NIH Public Access Policy. It the PI's responsibility to ensure that the journal's deposition policy is compliant with the NIH policy.

Certain publishers will deposit the final peer-reviewed manuscript on behalf of the author, but the author is still responsible for approving the paper for processing and display. It is the PI's responsibility to ensure that the journal will submit the manuscript upon acceptance and with no embargo period so that it is compliant with the NIH Policy.

If your publisher will not submit on your behalf, you will need to submit your final peer-reviewed manuscript directly to PMC using the NIH Manuscript Submission system. Manuscript deposit via the NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system is a multi-step process that currently takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks following initial approval of a submission, though processing times may vary. More detailed information on the process is available in the full overview.
