Data Repositories

How to select a data repository for your research needs.

Searching for Data

Before starting a search for existing data, consider what type of data you need (e.g., structured or unstructured, data format), the sample population, when and where the data was created, and the appropriate methodology for your research question or hypothesis.

As you come across potential datasets to reuse, also ask yourself the following:

  • How do I access the data?
    • Is there an application process?
    • Are there associated fees?
    • Will I need to obtain Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval to use this data?
  • How long will it take for me to obtain the data?
  • Are there restrictions on publishing on the data?
